Considered one of the greatest fighters of all time, Sugar Ray Leonard burst onto the international scene by winning the light-welterweight gold medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. He was one of the leading boxers in the world in the late 1970s and 1980s, winning world titles at 5 different weights and triumphing in contests with such celebrated opponents as Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler. Equipped with speed, ability and charisma, Sugar Ray Leonard, filled the boxing void left when Muhammad Ali retired in 1981.
With the boxing public in search of a new boxing superstar, Sugar Ray Leonard rose to the occasion – he was named Fighter of the Decade for the 1980s. He entered the decade a champion and left a champion. Sugar Ray Leonard was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996.
