There are few more honoured positions in football than captain of the mighty Shinboners – to continue the tradition of some of the most feared and respected players ever to have played the game. From the legendary Syd Barker, for whom the clubs best-and-fairest award is named, to his fellow big man Johnny Lewis, the tone was set early. Neither shirked a contest and each demanded the same of their teammates. The honour was bestowed on arguably the game’s greatest, Wayne Carey, at just 21 before the appointment of Adam Simpson and then little champ Brent Harvey.
Whatever the footy future holds for the Kangaroo’s 39th Captain Andrew Swallow, he’ll know he has one of the game’s greatest legacies in his corner. To celebrate Swallow’s appointment, we are pleased to release Fearless Leaders, a tribute to all of North Melbourne’s captains.
